MasterCard Frequently Asked Questions
What factors should be taken into account when applying for credit cards?
Welcome offers can be attractive. But this should not be the only reason to apply for the Card. Applicants are required to meet the minimum spending requirements within a specific time frame in order to be eligible. Therefore, it is worth checking the minimum spending requirements to see if it is achievable. Welcome gifts aside, it is important to choose a credit card that suits your spending pattern to maximise the rewards for your spending. If you are a frequent traveller, it is best to choose credit cards for miles. If you shop at supermarkets often, your money can go a long way if you choose a credit card that offers bonus points for spending in grocery stores.
Are existing customers eligible for welcome offers?
It varies among different card issuers. For example,
- Hang Seng MPOWER Card: Holders of other Hang Seng credit cards (except for MPOWER holders) can enjoy welcome offers upon successful application for MPOWER card
- Citibank and DBS: Welcome offers are only applicable to new customers who have not held any credit cards issued by the Bank in the past 12 months
- BEA: Welcome offers only apply to new customers who have not held any credit cards issued by the Bank in the last 6 months
How to earn miles for spending?
Cardholders can earn points for eligible transactions, which can be redeemed for miles. For example, with DBS Black World MasterCard, cardholders can earn DBS$ for eligible spending (DBS$48 = 1000 miles). What’s more, some credit cards such as DBS Black World MasterCard, Standard Chartered Asia Miles MasterCard and BEA Flyer World MasterCard offer free miles as welcome offers.
How to earn cash rebate for spending?
Cardholders can earn cash rebate for eligible transactions. Please note that some banks offer unlimited cash rebate while the others cap the amount of cash rebate cardholders can get. Some banks automatically credit cash rebate directly to cardholders’ account to offset spending while the others require cardholders to convert points earned to cash rebate. It is worth checking the details before applying.
